Responsibilities

This department is responsible for maintenance and distribution of reports/citations.

If you are in need of a burning permit, permits are disbursed through this department.

The department also processes:

• Permit to Purchase firearm applications for individuals who live outside the city of Owatonna, and
• Permits to Carry firearm applications for all county applicants.

Copy Charges for various reports:

1-4 Pages	No Charge
5-9 Pages	$1.25
10-99 Pages	25¢ Per Page
Disks	$5.00 Each
Portable Recording System Data	$25.00 Per Recording

Body Camera Footage:
To request Body Camera Footage, submit a copy of your photo ID along with a completed BWC Request Form via email, mail, or in person

*All fees must be paid in advance with cash or check only. Payments can be dropped off at the Sheriff's office or mailed to 2500 Alexander St. S.W. in Owatonna, MN

Additional Items:

Burning Permits are disbursed through this office - there is no fee for this service. 

Gun Permits to Purchase and Permits to Carry

For both permits there are forms to be completed and a background check is performed. 

• A Permit to Purchase is at No Charge and can take up to 30 days to process. 

  • “If you live inside of Owatonna city limits and wish to apply for a permit to purchase, you must contact the Owatonna Police Department Records Division located at 204 E Pearl St, Owatonna, MN."   
  • "If you live outside of city limits but within Steele County, you can obtain your permit to purchase through the Steele County Sheriff Records Division at 2500 Alexander St SW, Owatonna MN.”

• A Permit to Carry can take up to 30 days to process and requires both a driver's license and a certificate of gun training.   

  •  Permit To Carry applications are processed only at the Steele County Sheriff's Office at 2500 Alexander St. SW, Owatonna, MN 
  •  All fees must be paid in advance with cash or check only. 
  •  Fees Include:

Renewal	$75.00	0 to 90 Days Prior to Expiration
Renewal	$85.00	1 to 30 Days Past Expiration Date
Veterans/Military Personnel	$25.00	You Must Provide Military Credentials

Driving Records:  We are no longer able to provide you with a copy of your driving record.  You must contact the MN Dept. of Driver and Vehicle Services.
