Department Description and Services Provided

The Treasurer's Office is part of the administrative branch of County government and interacts with county departments, county residents, vendors, bond rating agencies, local government, state and federal agencies, school districts and special districts. The County Treasurer is an elected official and appointed by the County Board to also serve as Steele County’s Finance Director. The Treasurer/Finance Director also participates on various committees and boards, as directed by the Board.

The Treasurer’s Office is responsible to have cash available to pay County obligations, deposit collected funds in a depository account and invest excess funds in an investment account as allowed by Minnesota State Statute 118A. The Office also collects all County revenues including tax payments on 19,000 real estate parcels and more than 4,800 mobile home properties.

Property Tax Information

Steele County mails real estate property tax statements every March and mobile home statements in July. Each resident receives a tax statement even if the property taxes are paid by an escrow company. The statement outlines what tax jurisdictions the address falls under on lines six (6) through twelve (12), any special assessments on line thirteen (13) and the amount due for the 1st and 2nd half installment. Tax due dates vary depending on a property’s classification, but the table below outlines the due dates for property taxes in 2022. If dates land on a weekend the following business day becomes the due date.
