Steele County was established in 1855 and named after Attorney General Franklin Steele. In its earliest years, the county focused on a few essential duties: maintaining land records, operating the courts, and supporting basic infrastructure for a rapidly growing region.
As communities like Owatonna, Medford, and Blooming Prairie developed, the needs of residents expanded. County government grew alongside them, adding public health services, law enforcement, road maintenance, environmental oversight, and more.
