The Building Inspection Department is responsible for administering the State Building Code through the issuance of building permits and inspections for construction in the rural areas of the county. The department also provides building code administration and inspection services by contract for the cities of Blooming Prairie, Ellendale, and Medford.
Before starting any project that involves constructing, enlarging, altering, repairing, moving, demolishing, or changing the use of a building or structure, a property owner or authorized agent must apply for a building permit. This requirement also applies to work on gas, mechanical, electrical, or plumbing systems, and any regulated equipment. No regulated work may begin until the proper permit has been issued.
